Barbie is evolving to keep up with the times by introducing two new doll collections: the Barbie Fashionistas line and the Barbie Wellness collection. Children of all sizes, colors and abilities will be able to see themselves and relate to the popular toy, Mattel announced this week . The Barbie Fashionistas will have 176 dolls — both male and female — with nine different body types, 35 skin tones and 94 hairstyles. Barbies will now be available in curvy, petite and tall dolls, while Ken dolls will have narrow features and more broad shoulders, according to People . The hair on the figures will vary in color, texture and style. Man buns, cornrows, no hair and rainbow hair options will all be up for grabs. The Fashionistas collection will also represent those with different disabilities, including dolls in wheelchairs and with prosthetic legs.l […]
There will even be a doll with vitiligo, a condition that causes loss of skin color in blotches, which many became aware of through the rise of model Winnie Harlow. Mattel worked with a dermatologist to ensure it was portrayed correctly, according to Mashable.
One of the Barbie Fashionistas — the Barbie Fashionista Breathe With Me Barbie – will be featured in another new project, the Barbie Wellness collection, and will guide you through five different meditations, according to Cosmopolitan.
Mattel partnered with meditation app Headspace to release the Wellness collection and introduce young girls to the world of self-care. The collection will also include a Barbie Spa Doll and a Spa Day Fitness Doll.
“The collection teaches girls daily routines that promote emotional well-being and includes three key themes: meditation, physical well-being, and self-care; because Barbie knows to be one’s best is to give yourself the best care,” Mattel wrote in a press release.
The two lines are part of Barbie’s recent strides to make their dolls more inclusive and empowering, and a few months after the release of their gender neutral dolls.
The Fashionista line is available for purchase online, and the Wellness collection will be released this spring.
